Staying Safe During the Darker Nights

As the nights begin to draw in and the days become shorter, it is important to remember the extra precautions we can all take to stay safe when travelling to and from school. Whether you are walking, cycling or using public transport, being aware of your surroundings and planning ahead can make a real difference.

Here are some simple safety tips to help keep you safe during the darker months.

Travel with others where possible

If you can, walk to and from school with a friend or a group of friends. There is safety in numbers, and travelling together can help you feel more confident, particularly when it is dark.

Stay alert and aware

Always be aware of what is happening around you. Avoid distractions such as wearing earphones or chatting on your mobile phone while walking. Keeping your attention on your surroundings will help you notice potential dangers and react quickly if needed.

Choose safe, familiar routes

Stick to routes you know well and, wherever possible, use busy, well-lit streets. Avoid taking shortcuts through dark alleyways, parks or quiet areas, even if they seem quicker.

Be aware of traffic

When walking, use the pavement wherever possible and stay alert to traffic around you. Keep a safe distance from the road and watch out for vehicles, particularly when crossing roads or walking near junctions. If cycling, make sure your bike has working lights and that you wear something bright or reflective so drivers can see you.

Plan your journey home

Think ahead about the route you will take home and identify safe places you could go if something unexpected happens. These might include busy shops, garages, a friend's house or a police station. Knowing where to go can help you feel more prepared and confident.

A little preparation goes a long way

The darker evenings do not have to mean less freedom, but they do mean taking a little extra care. By staying alert, making sensible choices and looking out for one another, we can all help make journeys to and from school safer.
