French food & drink

Year 10 French students have been learning how to order food and drink in a café this week. Pupils created and performed their role plays in front of the class. For homework, pupils were asked to create a role play of their own, including questions from a waiter or waitress. Some superb work has been handed in! A special mention goes to R. Kaur in 10D1 for her excellent and funny role play which involved quite a lot of research. Well done for demonstrating our value of ‘Strive to improve to be your best’ in your homework. It was an absolute pleasure to read!

BAE SYSTEMS STEM roadshow in partnership with RAF and the Royal Navy

What a great start to British science week ! Bae systems roadshow visited Smestow Academy to give both year 7 and year 8 pupils a fantastic opportunity to see what the world of science, technology, engineering and Maths is like in the real world. The roadshow involved exploring the science of Artificial intelligence (AI) and pupils also were able to interact with a 'cobot' (robotic dog called Lexi) and also used AI to generate song lyrics and a music video.

It was a brilliant roadshow that definitely sparked excitement and interest from the pupils.

Pi Day

Every year maths enthusiasts celebrate Pi Day on March 14th (3.14) and this date also marks International Day of Maths. This year to celebrate Smestow Academy are running several competitions.

During form time each form was challenged to create a tessellating design out of Pi symbols. The form with the most creative design will win a prize. In addition pupils were asked to write a Piku, a poem similar in structure to a Japanese Haiku but following the structure of the number Pi. All entries should be submitted to Mrs Butler by Monday 17th March and will receive 10 house points. The overall winner will receive 100 house points.

In the Library there are some Pi symbol mazes to test pupils problem solving skills and during lunch on Friday there will be a Pi day themed word search.

In addition on Pi Day KS3 will take part in a short Pi day themed activity during their maths lesson.

Dawley house fundraiser for Wings and Paws Animal Rescue

Over half term Smestow staff have baked cakes and sold them to staff at the school. This was done to raise money for the Dawley House charity, Wings and Paws. We are very proud to have raised £127 for the charity.

Wings and Paws is a small non-profit voluntary animal rescue, run by founder Clare Vowles and her group of like-minded animal lovers. They are a solely voluntary, self-funded rescue who rely on fundraising and donations. The rescue was created to ensure any neglected, stray, feral or unloved animal will get the best chance at finding a forever home and a better life.

The team of foster families go above and beyond to care and nurse animals back to health, so they are ready to find a best friend, a fur mama or dad or just a caring individual who will give them what they truly deserve, a warm bed, food, water, and most importantly, unconditional love. We are very proud to support this charity as Dawley House and look forward to more fundraising events in the future. At Smestow, we believe in ‘making a difference every day’ and are happy to help Wings and Paws to do the same! Please see the link below for more information.

Globalbridge at Smestow Academy

We are proud to have partnered with Globalbridge - an online platform that will allow our pupils to track their experiences and achievements, and work towards their long-term career goals.

As part of our growing careers curriculum here at Smestow Academy, we wanted to enable our pupils to record the vast array of experiences that they have both inside and outside of our school, which can then support and shape their future choices.  Globalbridge will allow pupils to reflect on their current activities and identify what they want to do next - this could be exploring a new pupil leadership role, taking part in an extra-curricular club or recognising their hard work across their subjects in school.

We have launched Globalbridge in school today and will be giving all pupils the chance to update their profiles across the academic year, but they are welcome to login at anytime to update their platform.

City of Wolverhampton Youth Council

Congratulations to T.Cox and T. Jones who have officially been announced as successful representatives of the City of Wolverhampton Youth Council. Here they are pictured with The Mayor of Wolverhampton and Director of Children's Services.

These 2 pupils will work closely with City of Wolverhampton Council’s directors and councillors to promote the voice of young people at Smestow Academy and be committed to ensuring that their ideas, concerns, and aspirations are not only heard, but embedded into decisions that affect their lives.

We are looking forward to see the positive and powerful impact that these 2 pupils have on our community.
