It was the turn of the YR7 Football team to have a crack at the cup on Thursday. They travelled to Aldersley for what again was going to be a mammoth task; playing a team in the top division. The lads had a depleted squad including no goalkeeper so a special shoutout must go to Leo and Kurtis who had a half in goal each and did a fantastic job. The lads started the game brightly and had the better of the opening stages, lots of shots on goal and floods of corners. The pressure paid off when Harley went racing through on goal before calming slotting the ball under the on-rushing goalkeeper to give Smestow a 1-0 lead.
Aldersley responded fantastically well and got themselves two very quick fire goals to turn the game on its head and Smestow had to go again. That they did! The flurry of early corners paid off when Shko whipped in a great ball which was smashed home by Jastegh and meant that we went into half time at 2-2.
The second half was again started with fantastic tempo and pace by both sides but it was Aldersley that took an early lead in the half this time. Smestow huffed and puffed and their effort paid off when Shko very bravely slid in for a loose ball and managed to get it past the keeper to level the game again. It was now very tense going into the last 5 minutes or so where eventually Smestow ran out of steam and Aldersley managed to score 2 late wonder goals which secured their place in the next round of the cup.
However, the team should be very proud of their efforts and going head to toe with a very good team in two leagues higher than them, with no goalkeeper, is a credit to themselves. Player of the match this week was Romeo who was fantastic from start to finish. Defending for his life and making sure very little got through him but also driving the team up the field and being that attacking threat too. A brilliant all round performance from Romeo!
