Pi Day

Every year maths enthusiasts celebrate Pi Day on March 14th (3.14) and this date also marks International Day of Maths. This year to celebrate Smestow Academy are running several competitions.

During form time each form was challenged to create a tessellating design out of Pi symbols. The form with the most creative design will win a prize. In addition pupils were asked to write a Piku, a poem similar in structure to a Japanese Haiku but following the structure of the number Pi. All entries should be submitted to Mrs Butler by Monday 17th March and will receive 10 house points. The overall winner will receive 100 house points.

In the Library there are some Pi symbol mazes to test pupils problem solving skills and during lunch on Friday there will be a Pi day themed word search.

In addition on Pi Day KS3 will take part in a short Pi day themed activity during their maths lesson.

Careers Fair at Smestow Academy!

Today we have hosted a Careers Fair here at School in support of National Careers Week. Every year group has been invited to attend and speak with over 20 employers and training providers across the West Midlands and beyond.

From the Arena Theatre in Wolverhampton, to Oxford Brookes University, WM Jobs to Aston University and WATES to Scholars School Systems, we have had a wealth of exhibitors to todays event.

Providing opportunities to have meaningful experiences with employers is supporting our pupils in achieving Gatsby Benchmark 5.  Careers is a key part of our personal development here at Smestow Academy and we are very grateful to all our exhibitors for the time today.

Reading Fluency

Some of our pupils at Smestow Academy have worked incredibly hard to improve their reading fluency and have now graduated from the sixth form reading theatre with reading ages significantly higher than the National Average. This is a true testament to #successachievedtogether.

Year 10 Psychology

Year 10 psychology pupils completed their end-of-topic assessment on Development! This reflects Smestow’s teaching principle of ‘Review’, where students consolidate over six weeks of learning.

Throughout this time, we have consistently checked for understanding, ensuring that students build strong foundations before tackling their final assessment. Well done to all students for their hard work, effort, and progress! 👏

Did you know? GCSE Psychology exams include a variety of question styles – from multiple-choice questions to extended 9-mark essay responses, testing both knowledge and evaluation skills.

Keep up the great work, Year 10! 🎯✨

Year 10 Mock Interviews

Last half-term, we were grateful to host Carol Codner, our Careers and Enterprise advisor who gave sound advice to support our Year 10 pupils prepare for mock interviews with local employers.

Today, our Year 10 pupils attended their interviews and wow!  Our visitors were so impressed by how our pupils conducted themselves, the clear research that they had put into their chosen careers and the professionalism they were able to demonstrate as part of the interview process.

This event also supports pupils in achieving Gatsby Benchmark 5 - encounters with employers

Pupils had taken Carol's guidance and ensured that they attended on time, were dressed appropriately, engaged with the employers and pushed through any anxieties they may have had in order to leave a lasting impression.

Each of the 12 employers who visited, awarded a pupil with an achievement award meaning that 12 pupils were recognised for their efforts today.  A further 8 pupils were given honourable mentions for how hard they had worked too.  One colleague from a training provider also commented "students did the school proud".

We are immensely proud of all Year 10 for their approach to the mock interviews today.  We know that this will have made them step out of their comfort zone and overcome some challenges that they might not have felt that they could do before.

A huge thank you to all our colleagues from around the city for volunteering their time today and to Carol for supporting our School.

Fantastic effort Year 10 - keep the good work up!

Dawley house fundraiser for Wings and Paws Animal Rescue

Over half term Smestow staff have baked cakes and sold them to staff at the school. This was done to raise money for the Dawley House charity, Wings and Paws. We are very proud to have raised £127 for the charity.

Wings and Paws is a small non-profit voluntary animal rescue, run by founder Clare Vowles and her group of like-minded animal lovers. They are a solely voluntary, self-funded rescue who rely on fundraising and donations. The rescue was created to ensure any neglected, stray, feral or unloved animal will get the best chance at finding a forever home and a better life.

The team of foster families go above and beyond to care and nurse animals back to health, so they are ready to find a best friend, a fur mama or dad or just a caring individual who will give them what they truly deserve, a warm bed, food, water, and most importantly, unconditional love. We are very proud to support this charity as Dawley House and look forward to more fundraising events in the future. At Smestow, we believe in ‘making a difference every day’ and are happy to help Wings and Paws to do the same! Please see the link below for more information.
