Health & Social Care - Careers Talk

Today, Sixth Form Health and Social Care students were able to meet with a member of our English department; Miss Wright, who before teaching was a Social Worker.

Miss Wright discussed the university application process and what her degree was like when studying to become a social worker. She gave an insight into what the job was like and also what skills she has been able to transfer from social work to teaching.

Miss Wright is currently studying for her Masters degree whilst teaching, so she was also able to advise students of this process too.

Our Sixth Formers asked some insightful questions and will be apply to their new knowledge to our forthcoming coursework unit based on meeting individual care needs.

Year 10 - Prep session for Mock interviews

As part of our careers programme, Year 10 pupils will be invited to take part in mock interviews with local employers. This is organised through our partnership with Carol Codner, our Careers and Enterprise Advisor.

Activities such as these are great examples of how we support our pupils achieving Gatsby benchmark 5 which is about having positive encounters with employers. The interview will also provide personal guidance for our pupils which targets Gatsby benchmark 8.

This morning, Carol delivered an assembly to year 10 in preparation for their mock interviews. We discussed the importance of organising ourselves effectively for interview, body language and general presentation.

Year 10 will take part in mock interviews in February, so pupils have time to prepare themselves fully for their appointment.

University of Birmingham - Christmas Lecture

On the last week of Half term, our Year 7 pupils visited the University of Birmingham to take part in Christmas themed lecture. Our pupils were able to learn about a range of Christmas based topics including how Santa is able to use online data to track which presents to give to everyone at Christmas. A campus tour was also included where Year 7 learnt about the importance of the Joseph Chamberlain memorial clock tower and why university students refuse to walk underneath it. Our pupils were engaged throughout and made positive contributions to discussions that were taking place in the lecture halls and were able to  follow our school values whilst representing the school at UoB.

Staff and pupils have participated in the final house competition of the year today, decorating their doors ahead of the holidays! Well done to everybody for their efforts and for taking part! It was a very difficult decision for Mr Chamberlain and Mr Heywood who judged the competition - who would have been your winner?

Autumn Term Active Citizenship

This term has seen our staff and pupils fully embrace our personal development programme, in particular our active citizenship programme.  We aim to raise awareness of a variety of events taking place, not just at Smestow, but nationally and globally too.  You will have seen from our posts over the last 4 months, the activities that have taken place in school and we are grateful to our school community for taking part.  We are looking forward to what the Spring term brings!  Thank you to everyone for your contributions.

Christmas Jumper Day and Mince Pies & Carols

Today marked Smestow Academy's Christmas Jumper Day, alongside our second Mince Pies & Carols Event.  Staff and pupils were invited to wear their Christmas jumpers for a £1 donation to Save the Children.   Key stage 3 parents and carers were invited to join us in school for a morning of festivities and refreshments, with performances curated by our Creative Arts department.  We had keyboard soloists, singers, excerpts from "Nativity the musical" and even a pointe solo from one of our Year 9s!  We are very proud of all our performers who have worked incredibly hard over the last few weeks perfecting their performances for today and grateful to those families who were able to join us this morning!

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a peaceful new year.
