The mobile landscape remains the primary battlefield for threat actors, and the sophistication of Android Remote Access Trojans (RATs) continues to escalate. These Trojans allow attackers to transform a standard smartphone into a fully compromised surveillance and control device.
CraxsRAT, also known by analysts as G700 RAT, exemplifies this evolution. It is a highly adaptable and aggressively deployed malware. CraxsRAT originated from the Spymax RAT (SpyNote) framework following the leak of its source code in 2020, allowing subsequent actors to refine and weaponize the code base.
Currently, the threat is being spearheaded by the group "EVLF," believed to be operating out of Syria. The latest identified iterations, such as version v7.5 released in April 2024, showcase advanced obfuscation and expanded functionality, making it a significant concern for users across the globe.
While CraxsRAT possesses global capabilities, a particularly aggressive campaign targeting Southeast Asia was observed starting around April 2023. This campaign leveraged sophisticated social engineering techniques to achieve massive infection rates.
The attackers meticulously impersonated popular local entities to maximize trust and lure victims into downloading the malicious APK. Examples of impersonated brands include:
Infection is primarily achieved through three highly effective vectors:
CraxsRAT is not merely a backdoor; it is a comprehensive surveillance suite. Its technical sophistication allows it to maintain persistent control and extract granular data from the compromised device.
The RAT provides the threat actor with complete, real-time remote access, enabling the following actions:
Analysts have observed several advanced features that bolster CraxsRAT's resilience and stealth:
If a device is compromised, it rarely does so silently. Users should monitor their smartphones for these tell-tale signs of CraxsRAT activity:
Vigilance is the first line of defense. Here is a tiered approach to mitigating the risk posed by CraxsRAT.
If infection is confirmed, follow these steps:
CraxsRAT represents a persistent, multi-faceted threat. Its ability to seamlessly integrate surveillance, control, and data theft capabilities makes it exceptionally dangerous, leading to potential financial losses, reputational damage, and severe privacy breaches.
The threat actors behind CraxsRAT, particularly EVLF, are continually iterating. The recent release of v7.5 underscores the need for proactive defense. Do not assume a single scan is enough. Stay vigilant, keep your OS and applications updated, and treat every unexpected notification with suspicion.
Yes. CraxsRAT is highly capable of stealing banking credentials. It achieves this through multiple methods, including sophisticated keylogging (recording every keystroke entered into a banking app) and overlay attacks (displaying a fake, transparent login screen over the legitimate banking app to capture input).
Yes, a factory data reset effectively wipes the device and removes CraxsRAT entirely. However, it is crucial to back up all necessary data (photos, contacts, documents) first. If the backup itself contains the malicious APK or configuration files, the device may reinfect upon restoration.
We are pleased to be working with Children North East - an organisation that looks to identify barriers affecting young people and work alongside schools and communities to try to overcome these.
All pupils have been sent a link to have their voice heard to their school email address. Parents and Carers will also be sent a letter via WeDuc which contains a link to a parent/carer survey.
Please can we ask that we gather as many responses as possible so that we can identify further support that our young people need and look to see what we can do to help overcome this.
Thank you for your help!
This week in PE Students took part in an engaging adaptive football session. Pupils took part in a blindfolded activity designed to develop their communication skills and raise awareness of inclusive sport. Whilst playing a modified version of football it encouraged them to rely on teamwork, verbal communication, and senses other than sight.
The session focused on clear instruction, active listening, and trust between peers linking to our Smestow value of success achieved together. Students guided others through spoken cues and sound awareness in order to be successful as that team.
The activity was both challenging and rewarding, promoting cooperation, and confidence while reinforcing the value of effective communication use in PE and physical activity. Well done to everyone involved.

On Friday we welcomed Alison Cope to Smestow Academy, to deliver a very important message to pupils in Years 8-13.
Alison stressed the importance of our pupils making the right choices and being mindful of the impact their actions have on those around them. Alison shared her own personal story, which has had a profound impact on all that listened.
Thank you to Alison for sharing your story and highlighting this important message to our pupils.

Congratulations to our Year 10 students who have performed well on their end of unit exams. They have been assessed on the Media and Technology unit and many pupils scored 45 or more out of 50 on the listening and reading papers. The writing papers also showed real promise with many pupils demonstrating their opinions and using the past, present and future tenses to talk about their online activities. Bravo!
Below are photographs of exam work from Riley and Leyla in Year 10

Year 11s are about to sit their speaking exams in French. These begin on February 10th. Please see a fantastic alphabet resources on the website. Mademoiselle Robic has carefully planned an activity for pupils to listen and check their understanding of the French alphabet. This will greatly help students with the read-aloud task and in spelling any names on the role play task. Bonne chance !
Are you curious about how scientists isolate DNA from living organisms? Well, pupils attending Science Club got to answer that question this week! The young Scientists successfully extracted Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) from green peas. They added cold water and tablespoon of salt to green peas. The mixture was then ground up using a pestle and mortar, washing-up-liquid was added at this stage and the mixture ground up further. This was then filtered through a cloth to remove any solid particles, leaving behind the liquid. Cold ethanol was then slowly added to the remaining liquid. After a few moments the DNA began to precipitate and form white, stringy clumps at the top of the test tube.

Year 8 and 9 pupils had a brilliant STEM Day with the Smallpiece Trust, taking on the challenge of designing and building a lander.
Teams created and tested prototypes, focusing on stability, durability and cushioning to protect their payload on landing. Lots of creativity, problem-solving and teamwork on show as students tested, refined and improved their designs. Finally summarised their design in a presentation to their peers.
A fantastic hands-on introduction to real-world engineering and STEM careers. Congratulations to the winning group who successfully score 17/18 on teamwork, presentation, prototype testing and location.

The Higher and Degree Vacancy Listings will be produced three times this academic year (October, January and April) by Amazing Apprenticeships on behalf of the Careers and Enterprise Company.
